Recognize and Avoid the "Death of Your Salesman"
Minneapolis, MN, November 19, 2004 - Copier Careers, a Minneapolis based niche recruiting firm serving the Document Imaging Industry for over 20 years just published a white paper titled Copier sales burnout: When the "opportunity clock" stops. This white paper recognizes salesperson burnout and identifies strategies to avoid the Death of your Salesperson. Dealerships can save thousands yearly in turnover and retraining by not losing your salespeople to copier sales burnout.
For the copier salesperson, the customer landscape can change like the weather the determining factors seem to be price fluctuations and low customer loyalty. This shift from relationship selling to cold calling has become the norm and can prove to be a significant challenge which contributes to burnout and ultimately the death of your salesperson when they leave the job. Look for burnout warning signs when fiscal demands and quotas aren't met resulting in stress. Employers can identify burnout by keeping an eye out for their salesperson: have they started isolating, are they indulging in excess behavior of any kind, have they lost of motivation? These kinds of behavior are generally the warning signs to pay attention to. Once salespeople lose their confidence, the stress continues to build about losing their job, and that can lead them to rotate right out of the industry. Most will not confide in management, but they will vent to their peers.
Burnout frequently occurs when the bottom line is not met. A good strategy for managers is to Motivate - Mentor - Monitor with consistent veracity. However, this is easier said than done and many Sales Managers are not very supportive and not terribly motivating. Ultimately, it's the Sales Manager's responsibility to recognize the burnout warning signs. They also need to allow the salesperson to safely vent their frustrations, allow them to identify the problem and help them brainstorm a solution allowing and facilitating this process to unfold often makes problems manageable and thus creates a win-win situation.
